Major breakthrough for Hoyer in the Oil & Gas industry

Dedicated programmes for explosion-proof motors and medium-voltage motors, a global supply chain and a wide range of results from the maritime sector have enabled Hoyer to secure powerful reference projects in the petrochemical market. In 2020 and 2021, Hoyer was selected to supply motors to more than 20 projects within three areas: LPG, tankers and FSRUs.

Despite having decades of experience as a motor supplier, Hoyer is still one of the more recent players in the oil and gas industry. The harsh, merciless operating conditions demand rigorous standards for adaptation, safety, documentation and testing all the equipment used. The demands are even higher when the equipment is used in hazardous areas. This is why the suppliers must prove their worth before they win the sector’s trust, which is often a time-consuming process.

Hoyer’s petrochemical programme has already secured a great number of strong references within the industry, however. These include explosion-proof motors for compressors and pumps for loading systems on multiple LPG carriers, as well as medium voltage motors for seawater raising pumps on FSRUs. Overall, Hoyer has delivered to more than 20 ships and other projects in the petrochemical industry.

Hoyer Motors aims to become the preferred Ex motor brand within selected petrochemical and maritime niche markets. The timetable for achieving this goal is the same as always: quality products, strong documentation and marketing-leading service.

Action plan based on familiar strengths

Hoyer’s long history and wide-ranging experience within other demanding industries influence its approach to the petrochemical industry. Rather than delving directly into one of the most challenging areas in the sector, Hoyer aims to win market shares in niche areas where its familiar strengths (achieved in markets such as the maritime sector) can be exploited.

“Many of the lessons we’ve learned, and the skill sets and contacts we’ve acquired were acquired through our maritime company can be applied to the petrochemical industry. Even if we’re one of the more recent players in the sector, we consider this an advantage because it enables us to challenges our customers’ approach to electric motors and develop innovative solutions in collaboration with them,” says Jonas Løgstrup Hansen, Segment Manager, Oil & Gas, Hoyer Motors.

Initially, Hoyer made a strategic decision to focus on rising production, including niche segments such as LNG and LPG carriers, product ships, tankers, floating platforms such as FSRUs and FPSOs, and supply ships.

Dedicated Ex motor programme in Asia

One of the cornerstones of Hoyer’s petrochemical commitment is the range of explosion-proof marine motors. In 2018, Hoyer launched the development of an Ex motor supply chain in Asia to supplement its EU-based production processes. That same year, Hoyer introduced its range of medium-voltage motors, which are also a key product for the targeted oil and gas applications.

This enables Hoyer to meet customer expectations of quality, documentation and short lead times in both Europe and Asia, as most projects require customised solutions and comprehensive documentation and testing. Being able to manufacture, test and supply motors locally in Asia has been a decisive factor in many of Hoyer’s most recent reference petrochemical projects, in which Hoyer has become an integral part of its customers’ local supply chains.

A launch pad for new opportunities

Hoyer aims to further develop its range of energy-efficient Ex motors, and continuously develop its documentation and certification package. Its more long-term goals including being able to provide complete Ex solutions, including motors, frequency converters and cabinets, as well as penetrate the market for offshore platforms and topside production.

“I’m proud to see that 2021 marked Hoyer Motors’ official breakthrough into the VLGC market. Based on the transition to liquefied gas as a more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels like coal and fuel oil, we are experiencing rapid growth in the market for LNG and LPG carriers. The lessons learned and skill-sets acquired are one step on the way to new opportunities in the petrochemical industry,” says Henrik Sørensen, CEO, Hoyer Motors.

Olie og gas

Most processes in the oil and gas industry are complex and applications are exposed to hazardous environments. This requires durable applications, stricter documentation and a high level of safety.
